Mary Lyon was the first American woman to earn a master's degree in theology. She was also the first woman in the U.S. to be ordained as a minister in the Anglican Church. Her religious career began in 1806 when she was ordained by Bishop Meade of Virginia before entering the Female College in Lexington, Virginia
She was later elected president of the college when it became coeducational. In 1828, Lyon returned to England where she founded the Richmond Orphanage for Girls, which later became home for boys. Her work with children continued until her death in 1849.
